Waste Reduction and Recycling Guides

NDEP and the Business Environmental Program at UNR developed recycling guides for households, restaurants and hotels to assist in making choices to reduce waste, reuse, and recycle during the COVID-19 reopening. The webinar presents facts regarding the latest credible information on the virus transmission and how it relates to waste. Patty will also provide an update on the state of recycling in Nevada.

Waste reduction and recycling are integrated processes, often referred to as the “circular economy,” involving collection, sorting, processing, and manufacturing. The circular economy also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions reduction, economic development, and job creation. Investments in recycling infrastructure that processes waste materials into usable feedstock or new products can support Nevada’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery. Implementation of the City of Reno’s Sustainability Plan: Update and Gap Analysis presented by Suzanne Linfante, Management Analyst, City of Reno

The City of Reno Sustainability Plan was adopted July 2019. An update is provided on barriers to implementation, progress made to date, and how the community can be more involved and assist with long-range goals and specific actions. The City also seeks guidance on how it can better support the community under specific priorities.

Innovation & Integration in Nevada Green Building

This panel discusses new technologies and sustainability certifications that have been integrated into building standards in response to the global pandemic and impacts on green building. Jaime Villarino-Eilenberger moderated and provided an overview of the new LEED Arc Re-Entry program as well as the new WELL Health-Safety Rating for Facility Operations & Management. Brian Johnson, Senior Mechanical Engineer at McKinstry, discusses the operation of building HVAC and plumbing systems in response to a pandemic as well as ASHRAE guidelines to ensure building systems are running efficiently for reoccupation. Dr. Ayodele Akinola, Assistant Director, Facilities Operations and Capital Planning at TMCC, provided a case study of TMCC’s innovations in sustainable building for their campus. Erica Gallegos, GreenBizTracker manager, reviews local benchmarking policies and Nevada Green Business Certification.
